Large Adult Ambulatory BP Monitoring Cuff is commonly used in twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, which is a way of measuring and managing high blood pressure (hypertension).

Hypertension is a blood pressure measurement in which your systolic (upper) blood pressure is at or above 130, and your diastolic (lower) blood pressure is at or above 80 (or 130/80).

When you're at your doctor's office or clinic, an instrument called a sphygmomanometer is used to take your BP readings. Usually, only one or two readings are taken during your visit.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring allows your blood pressure (BP) readings to be recorded over a 24-hour period, whether you're awake or asleep. Ambulatory BP monitoring yields many readings over a continuous period. In most cases, readings are taken every 20 to 30 minutes during the day and every hour at night. Your heart rate can be measured at the same time.

These multiple readings are averaged over the 24-hour period. Changes in BP and heart rate, the BP distribution pattern and other statistics are calculated.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring?

If you have high blood pressure (hypertension), your doctor may recommend that you wear an ambulatory blood pressure monitor. This device is about the size of a portable radio and is typically worn on your belt for a 24-hour period. The blood pressure cuff, which can be worn discreetly under your clothing, automatically measures your blood pressure approximately every 30 minutes throughout the day.The data collected provides your doctor with valuable insight into how your blood pressure changes over time and helps determine whether your current treatment plan is effective.

How it works

The small blood pressure cuff that's connected to the monitor will automatically check your blood pressure about every 30 minutes. This includes while you're sleeping. You also will be asked to keep a diary of your day's activities. This gives your doctor information about when you were active and when you were resting. After 24 hours of monitoring, you will take the machine and your diary to the doctor's office. The blood pressure information is transferred from the monitor to a computer. Your doctor will review the information with you and decide if your treatment program is working or if you need to make changes.

Q: Why Use Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring?

A: Diagnosing and treating hypertension is serious business, and as research shows, ABPM is far superior to other testing available to clinicians.  ABPM provides valuable diagnostic information that in-clinic and home blood pressure monitoring systems are incapable of measuring including:   BP variability and a more accurate estimation of true blood pressure   Overnight changes in blood pressure (dipper status)   Morning surges in blood press   In general, ABPM is recognized in the medical community as a valuable tool for supporting the management of appropriate pharmacologic treatment as well as the assessment of:   "White coat" hypertension, when elevated blood pressure measurements are recorded in the physican's office environment while blood pressure readings outside the physician's office are within a normal range.   Resistant hypertension, when multiple anti-hypertensive medications fail to adequately control high blood pressure.   Masked hypertension, when in-office measurements fall within an acceptable range, but the mean blood pressure is actually above the acceptable range.   Hypotensive symptoms with hypertensive medications.   The diagnostic test begins with fitting a patient with a portable monitor and BP cuff.  The patient leaves and returns the next day.  Over this period of time, the monitor takes measurements periodically as programmed by the clinician, generally each 15-30 minutes during awake hours and 30-45 minutes during sleeping hours.

Q: What happens if a blood pressure cuff is too big?

A: The most common error when using indirect blood pressure measuring equipment is using an incorrectly sized cuff. A BP cuff that is too large will give falsely low readings, while an overly small cuff will provide readings that are falsely high.

Q: How do I choose the right size blood pressure cuff? Select a Cuff Size Based on Arm Circumference

A: The ideal cuff bladder length is ≥ 80 percent of the patient's arm circumference. The ideal cuff bladder width is ≥ 40 percent of the patient's arm circumference.

Q; Does a loose cuff affect blood pressure?

A: A cuff that is too snug or too loose on the mid-upper arm can lead to greatly exaggerated blood pressure measurements, results of a community-based study show.
